Life Insurance

OC provides basic life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) policy for each eligible employee at no cost to you. The policy provides life and AD&D coverage equal to one times (2x) your annual earnings, up to $150,000.

In addition to the company-provided group life insurance, we are happy to offer employees the ability to purchase additional coverage to supplement the company-provided through MetLife. Employees purchasing supplemental life through OC are able to secure additional Life Insurance at the lower group life rates versus purchasing on the open market. All coverage offers Portability, so you can keep your coverage, even if you were to leave OC.

Disability

Voluntary Short-Term Disability Insurance replaces a portion of your income when you are unable to work due to illness or injury. This is an employee paid benefit. This coverage provides a weekly benefit that equals 60% of your weekly earnings up to a $1,500 weekly maximum. Benefits become available after you have been disabled for fourteen (14) days due to illness and injury (benefits begin on the 15th day). Benefits are payable for a maximum duration of 11 weeks.

If you remain disabled for 90 consecutive days due to any one disabling illness or injury, you will be eligible to receive Long-Term Disability benefits. If approved by the insurance carrier, this coverage will provide a continued source of income that equals 60% of your monthly earnings to a maximum of $5,000 per month. Long-Term Disability will continue to be payable up to Social Security Normal Retirement Age. Long-Term Disability is paid for by the University and will not cost employees anything.

Accident

Group Accident Insurance helps to ease the financial impact of an accident. It provides you with a payment to use as you see fit and can help with any of the out-of-pocket expenses you may incur as a result of an accident, such as insurance deductibles, copays, transportation to/ from medical centers, childcare and more. Accidents can happen anytime, anywhere. Today’s active lifestyles may make you more susceptible, too. You can’t plan for accidents, but you can be better prepared financially to handle them when they do occur. Colonial Life offers Accident Insurance so you can focus more on your recovery and less on your finances.

Hospital Indemnity

Hospital Indemnity Insurance helps keep your finances on track if you’re hospitalized. While your health insurance covers many medical costs, you’re still responsible for expenses like deductibles, copays, and other out-of-pocket charges. With Colonial Life, you’ll receive a check paid directly to you—not your medical providers—after your claim is approved. You can use the funds however you choose, whether for medical bills or everyday expenses. Coverage is also available for your spouse and children, providing additional financial protection and peace of mind.

Critical Illness

Full-time OC employees can purchase Critical Illness Insurance to help offset the financial impact of a serious diagnosis. You can choose coverage amounts of $10,000, $20,000, or $30,000. If you experience a covered condition such as cancer, heart attack, kidney failure, or an organ transplant, you’ll receive a lump-sum payment to use however you need—medical bills, household expenses, or anything else. Coverage is guaranteed when you enroll as a new hire, with no medical questions required. Rates are based on age, coverage level, and tobacco use, and are selected through Employee Navigator.

As an employee you may be able to make additional tax-deferred contributions subject to the guidelines and limitations outlined in IRS Publication 571. The university’s 403(b) includes a ROTH option the employee may choose for their contribution. The maximum amount you can contribute to your 403(b) account on a pretax basis is determined by the IRS and changes each year.
